Hair Growth Cycle
Our hair is a constant cycle of growth and falling down. It grows with approximately with 0.3 to 0.4 mm per day or with about 6 inches per year. The growth and loss of hair is completely random. This means that at any given time a random number of hairs are growing, a random number are in their stable phase and a random number are falling off.
The three stages in the hair growth process are anagen (growth stage), catagen (transitional stage) and telogen (resting stage).
Anagen
During this stage the hair is growing and living. It is known as the active phase. The growth is achieved by the rapid division of the cells in the base of the hair. As a result, a new hair is formed and pushed out the club hair up the follicle. The speed during this period can reach 1 cm per every 28 days. The duration of the stage is two to six years. People for who it is easy to grow a very long hair have a very long anagen stage. On the opposite, people experiencing difficulties growing long hair have a short active stage.
The rest of the body hair such as the one on the arms, eyelashes, and eyebrows has a considerable shorter active stage spanning from 30 to 45 days.
Catagen
This is the transitional stage. It lasts for two to three weeks and is when the club hair is formed. At any given point about 3% of the hair is in this stage.
Telogen
10 to 15% of all the hair is in its resting phase. It lasts for about 100 days. The club of the hair is completely formed by this point and the follicle is at rest. The hairs we are shedding every day are in their telogen stage. It is normal to lose from 25 to 100 hairs a day. Normal significant hair loss can occur after stressful events for the body such as a child birth, fever, an operation, sudden weigh loss, stressful event or as a side effect of some medications.
